The University of Birmingham Men’s Volleyball team faced a struggling Derby team on Wednesday at the Munrow. Birmingham’s quality was shown as they outmatched their opponents 3-0 in sets, coming out comfortable victors.
Throughout the game, it always felt like Birmingham were the greater side and from the start they showed this beginning with a strong serve game. Whereas Derby struggled with their serves which gave Birmingham an early advantage.
However, as the first set began to come to an end Derby pulled back, wining 5 consecutive points to make it a tense affair for who was going to win the first set. It would be the Lions though that pulled it altogether though and eventually outlasted Derby to take the set 25-22.
Whilst the first set was a challenge and Derby showed a real fight, the second set would not follow this pattern. Instead the second set followed perhaps what was first predicted this game would turn in to.
Birmingham in the second set showed their class coming out on top 25-13 and in this set the class difference between the two sides was shown. Throughout Derby made mistakes and the Lions played their best volleyball at this stage and it seemed like they would cruise to victory.
After the second set, it seemed that Birmingham would take an easy win and cruise to a 3-0 victory. Whilst they did this in the end, they would make it quite difficult as Derby started off the 3rd set quite well, even taking the lead.
This continued and Derby continued to lead until late into what would be the final set before the Lions pulled it back together and took the lead continuing their dominance until the end and coming out on top 25-18.
Birmingham were by far the better team and even though it was not a stunning performance they did what they needed to do and therefore came out handsome and continuing on their good run of form this season.
