Leon Vynehall quickly rose to fame after a stint as resident DJ at Akaakaroar in Brighton. After a debut EP on the label 3024, who have released music from all corners of dance music, ‘Music for the Uninvited’ (his 2nd EP) was received with open arms by the dance music community. Vynehall stated that his tastes were influenced from a young age by the hip-hop and funk tapes that his mum introduced to him as a child. Many critics dubbed this EP as one of the finest of 2014, and ever since Leon has experimented and honed his abilities, with trusted Pitchfork magazine stating “Vynehall has developed into a master craftsman”.
In June this year, the Guardian featured Leon Vynehall on a ‘one to watch’ article following the release of his latest creative project Nothing is Still. Leon Vynehall has always considered himself as something more than just a four-to-the-floor ‘house guy’, and this is evident in his latest release. Vynehall’s inspiration came from his Grandmother’s emigration to America, following the death of his grandfather. Collaborating with Max Sztyber, Vynehall co-wrote a novella, based loosely on his Grandmother’s experiences. After its publication, Vynehall then set about translating the story into a series of downtempo instrumentals released on the legendary label Ninja Tune, which placed his discography among the likes of dance music duo Bicep, and Bonobo. The project evolved further, with expansions into the visual arts culminating with a three day audio-visual installation at the Hackney Showroom.
Leftfoot and Moodfix are coming together to bring Leon Vynehall to the Hare and Hounds on 7th December. Vynehall will be playing all night long in the intimate Kings Heath venue, which has hosted several huge names in the last few months including Midland, Hunee and Artwork. You can expect to see a mix of disco, hip-hop and house throughout the night. This is definitely not one to miss.
