Joel Baker has stolen the hearts of Burn FM following his recent interview. The Nottingham-born singer chatted away enthusiastically about his recent tour and upcoming album, giving a backstage pass to his life on the road and the inspiration behind his music. His genuine passion for his career and the music he creates was paramount.
The most noticeable aspect within the interview was that of Joel’s down-to-earth attitude. Discussing life on the road, Joel described the average day to be particularly simple, with his sole job (aside from performing) just to get to the next town and locate a Nando’s. Comparing Nando’s to his Pokécentre, his love for the classic chicken chain, and its importance in his tour routine, definitely shone through. Relating to each and every individual on the planet with his sheer love for Nando’s just made Joel Baker a more likeable figure within music.
And it is this attitude, his personality, that adds to our love of Joel Baker as an artist, his love further shown in his huge Spotify following of 500,000 monthly listeners. As his music has transgressed from the 2013 EP ‘Long Sleeves’ to his newest release, ‘Winter Dreams’, his fan base has only grown. And the rise of Joel Baker is only going to continue, as his debut album release is on the horizon. The arrival of new music, and hopefully a second headline tour, is eagerly awaited.
In this transgression of music, one thing has remained the same for Joel; the importance of the music to aid his expression of emotion. Discussing how difficult expressing his feelings was as a teenager, music for him acted as a mode through which he could articulate his emotions. It is clear, therefore, that the personal touch to his music is of great importance. Also, talking about his early inspiration in music, Joel discussed his Dad’s role in introducing him to artists such as Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd, who came to influence his writing, and the poetry of Bob Dylan specifically that inspired him further. His songs therefore become an upbeat, different representation of feeling.
Essentially, Joel Baker is an artist we cannot help to love and his likeable character only adds to the enjoyment of his music. His love and passion for the work he creates is undisputable, and his enthusiasm for any and all aspects of the singer-song writing world shows this. Frankly, therefore, it is not a question of if you should listen to Joel Baker, but that you should.
