With the season nearing its end, a win for Birmingham would greatly increase their chances of success later in the season. This game against Aston was therefore a pivotal one for Birmingham, as they unfortunately suffered a loss last week against Nottingham 1sts.
Birmingham played well in the first set, with a run of ten successive points bringing the score up from 4-3 to 14-3. Aston, however, were determined to fight back, bringing the score to 17-12. Yet that wasn’t enough for Aston to secure the set, as Birmingham responded in style, taking the set 25-20 as result of some brilliant serving by the team captain, Harriet Roberts. Some fantastic team work from Flavia Irti and Nikita Heung, key players in the set as both served powerfully, was also a key factor in Birmingham’s triumph.

Half time saw Birmingham in the lead with the score standing at 11-9 and the team worked well to secure the second set, quickly bringing the score to 25-20. Aston took the lead early on, but Birmingham maintained their momentum from the opening set, and soon secured the second.
Birmingham went on to take an early lead in the third set, quickly securing a 6-0 lead. This comfortable lead was the result of the consistent pressure Aston were put under, and Birmingham’s dominance was soon reflected in the final score of 25-13, and a fantastic overall 3-0 victory. Aston, however, fought well, making it a tough game for Birmingham.
We spoke to Birmingham’s captain Harriet Robertson after the game, who said that she was pleased with the result as Aston play in a different style and Birmingham are a few players down at the moment. Robertson remarked that the game was a good bonding experience for the team and that their attack was particularly strong. This can clearly be seen in the successful result of the game.
