UOB women’s first team table tennis duo Vickey Lee and Weiting Yang defeated their Warwick opponents 4-1 in a lively match to pick up their first victory of the season on Wednesday in the Munrow sport’s centre.
After losing successive matches against formidable Nottingham women’s sides in previous weeks, playing against opponents who had represented Great Britain, the UOB table tennis team hit back with a decisive victory.
The opening matches saw both Birmingham Women win against spirited Warwick opponents. Vickey Lee started slowly losing her opening games 7-11 and 8-11 against her opponent Xu Rong. However Vickey fought back impressively, showing fantastic character by battling to an 11-5, 11-4, 11-7 victory.
Similarly in the other preliminary singles match Weiting Yang outperformed her opponent with some impressive, calm stroke play demonstrating great dexterity to win her match 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 despite dropping a game.
The second round of singles matches proved tricky for both Birmingham players, but still showed enough class to guarantee victory before the final doubles clash. Vickey Lee exhibited a cool, composed performance to win her clash in a clean sweep 11-8, 11-5 and 11-8. However despite a resolute showing Weiting Yang struggled to beat her strong opponent losing 9-11, 6-11 and 8-11.
Although Birmingham had already guaranteed victory from their singles matches, the duo displayed an impressive performance hammering their opponents 11-8, 11-5 and 11-8. After such a dominant, impressive performance the Birmingham women’s side will hope that the victory can spur them on to further wins in their upcoming fixtures against Cambridge 1sts and Nottingham 2nds!
After the victory we spoke to Table Tennis captain Simon Price about his reaction and expectations for the season. Simon was incredibly proud of the women’s side and hoped that the victory would help them to achieve their objectives of staying in the league following last year’s promotion!
We wish Simon and all the Table Tennis team the best of luck in their upcoming fixtures!
