Under the watchful eye of Old Joe, the Women’s lacrosse first-team took to them field at Metchley knowing that a win against Nottingham was essential. Situated mid-table and level on points with Nottingham, Birmingham knew how important victory would be to the overall outcome of this season, even at this early phase of the season.
However, Birmingham were subject to the unwavering force of three stand-out Nottingham attackers who ran rout in the first half, effectively putting the game beyond Birmingham already. Without the heroics of goalkeeper Harriet Side, Birmingham could have been looking at an embarrassing scoreline.
The half-time break allowed Birmingham to regroup and alternate their tactics and sure enough their defence was soon looking much more solid. By now though the damage had been done and unfortunately the result was beyond doubt.
Nottingham finished as deserved winners 11-4. Birmingham provided a persistent threat on the counter-attack and their defence looked much better in the second-half and should take many positives out of this game, as they look to bounce back with victory next week.
