With the Men’s 1st XI representing the University of Birmingham in the National North Play-Offs, BurnFM met the experienced and much-loved First Team coach, Rob Williams, as they made their preparations.
Birmingham kick-start their play off campaign with a daunting trip to Scotland to face Abertay University on the 13th April before facing Liverpool John Moores at Metchley just a week later, which promises to be an enticing fixture.
Williams was keen to emphasise what a fantastic season the whole club has had with the both the 1st XI and 2nd XI winning their respective leagues. A special mention must go to the 2nd XI who have now successfully secured two promotions in just three years, a sign of a team on the rise playing with the upmost confidence.
Not to be outdone by their friends in the 2nd team, the 1st XI managed to go one better than their previous two seasons finishes, in which they ended up falling tantalisingly short of the title, setting their best ever points total in the process.
The 3rd XI also need to be congratulated for their highest points total in three seasons, which was ultimately their target at the beginning of the season. The development squad, in their debut season, finished in a highly respectable second place in their league.
When questioned about their chances in the play offs, Williams stated that the players have been trying hard over the supposedly break for Easter and acknowledged that “if we approach the play offs as we did for the regular season, then we have a great chance”.
The entire club and their supporters will be hoping the Birmingham Lions can finish their impressive season on a high, which Williams said would be well deserved considering all the hard work they have put in throughout the season. Williams, in his final season at the university, will be eying up the prospect of leaving the club with play off success.
All that is left to do is to wish the Birmingham Lions good luck and hope they can end the season on a high.
Sam Bernard.
