It was first versus second going into this league match, with Cambridge sitting just three points ahead of Birmingham, before the encounter at Metchley began. And the positions were not to change by the end of the match, as an enthralling draw meant both sides remained in their first and second placings.
It was the away side who drew first blood in this topsy-turvy encounter, scoring after just five minutes- their forward with a smart finish following neatly cutting in from the right. But Birmingham fought back strongly, despite some fine saves from the Cambridge keeper- to take a 2-1 lead into the break after the first quarter, Matt Collier and Will Rumsey with the goals for Brum.
Cambridge took the initiative in the second quarter, dominating for large periods. Enabling them to go into the half time break leading 4-3, despite another goal from Collier- who was Birmingham’s most dangerous attacker all game.
In the third quarter it was Birmingham who seized back control, camping in Cambridge’s half for the vast majority of the quarter- though they did have one excursion into the Brum D, which gave them a score to lead 5-3. Though the home side did not let this deter them as they scored two goals in quick succession, courtesy of Dave Lees and Joe Mooney, towards the end of the quarter. Meaning the score was all square at 5-5 going into the final quarter.
The final quarter was incredibly open, with both sides having chances to take the lead. But again Cambridge scored first, giving them a vital 6-5 lead going into the final five minutes. A goal which was harsh on Birmingham, who were banging on the Cambridge door, but the keeper was keeping it shut tight with a string of reaction saves. But Brum’s Jack Walker eventually knocked down the proverbial door, ghosting in between the defensive lines to score a hugely important equaliser for the home side.
The game finished 6-6, meaning Cambridge remains top, but Birmingham’s chase for the title is far from over. And if they play like they did today- it will be tough to stop them in their quest for glory.
