Birmingham Back to Winning Ways
After a draw in their last game against Sheffield Hallam, Birmingham Men’s Firsts were looking to carry on their unbeaten streak against Durham Men’s Firsts.
From the start, Birmingham were on top, retaining the ball for long periods of time, and moving it around too fast for Durham to keep up. This early control quickly paid off, as Birmingham attacked the left wing, and number 16 shot towards the left corner, and whilst the Durham keeper did get a hand to it, he couldn’t keep it out, making it 1-0 within the first 10 minutes.
Birmingham continued to control the game for the rest of the half, but were unable to convert the chances they were making, thanks manly to an excellent performance from Durham’s keeper. This meant that Birmingham went in a goal up at half time.
The second half brought more of the same as Birmingham carried on pressing the Durham goal without being able to double their lead. Durham then applied some pressure of their own, but Birmingham’s defence did their job and held strong.
Then, just as Durham were threatening an equaliser, Birmingham broke out of defence and won a short corner, which they then expertly converted, making it 2-0 just before the final whistle.
To Durham’s credit, they didn’t give up as most teams would at 2-0 down so late on, and managed to drag it back to 2-1 before the final whistle, and even playing without a goalie for the final few seconds, but it wasn’t enough, and Birmingham secured their third win of the season, retaining their unbeaten record and sending themselves to the top of their league.
Next, Birmingham are away to Loughborough Men’s Firsts who are currently sitting bottom of the league without a win so far in the season. Whilst away games are never easy, with the form Birmingham are in, they should be able to secure another win and stay at the top of the league.
