In their first home game of the season the Womens 3s Lacrosse team took on major rivals Loughborough 2s at Metchley 3G. Having lost all their games so far this season, the 3s were just looking to play a good game against the top of the table team despite playing with the bare minimum of players due to a spate of team injuries.
The game started well for Birmingham with a brilliant goal in the first two minutes by Sophie GeeDee resulting from a beautiful run down the pitch from the centre draw. Birmingham then continued to maintain most the possession in the first quarter, with a second goal by Sophie Redvers boosting the teams confidence further. With great defending throughout the first quarter Loughborough were only able to sneak in 3 goals leaving the score at the end of the first quarter as 3-2.
After a quick team talk Birmingham came back into the game more determined than ever to prove their worth. Unfortunately Loughborough seemed to have the same mentality, and started off the second quarter by scoring two goals, bringing the score to 5-2. Despite the blow Birmingham were quick to retaliate with a fantastic rescue from the defence and run down the pitch resulting in a great goal by Holly Baker. With Loughborough quick to retaliate with another goal Birmingham still managed to maintain the goal difference with a quick score by Eva Rurlander bringing the half-time score to 6-4.
The third quarter of the game started strongly for Birmingham with Sophie GeeDee scoring her second goal of the match and boosting the score to 6-5. The rest of the quarter continued to go back and forth with both sides competing hard to wrestle control of the match, leading to a 8-8 draw at the end of the third quarter.
The final quarter proved to be the most competitive yet, with elbows flying out everywhere. Two quick goals by Loughborough brought the scoreline to 10-8 however lead goal scorer Sophie GeeDee soon retaliated by putting another one in the back of the net for Birmingham. Loughborough were lucky to get their final goal of the game after some brilliant defending by Birmingham boosting their goal number to 11. In a final push Birminghams Sophie GeeDee scored a the final goal of the game giving us an end score of 11-10 to Loughborough.
Birmingham were really unlucky to lose this closely fought game but put on a brilliant performance which really showed what the team can do, hopefully this will give the girls confidence a real boost after a disappointing start to the season.
