UoB Netball 1st won emphatically against Leeds Beckett Women’s 1st with an impressive 39-25 scoreline. Previously, Birmingham had lost three consecutive games against Leeds Beckett so the outcome was by no means certain and there was much anticipation before the game.
The crowd at the Munroe Sports Arena were in fora treat as the Lions played well and scored some fantastic goals. In the first quarter the teams did appear to be evenly matched but there was reason for optimism after the first quarter as Birmingham had secured a slender lead of 6-5.
It was at this point, however, that the quality within the Lions shined due to the diligence and persistence of their goal shooter, Thea Grattidge, who was especially clinical. Birmimgham scored goal after goal, much to the delight of the crowd and began to steadily extend their lead. By the halftime buzzer the Lions were leading 19-10.
With half an hour left, Birmingham were in a fairly comfortable position, but Leeds Beckett could have crept back into the game were it not for the excellent defensive play of Francesca Williams- Birmingham’s goalkeeper. Williams, who has captained the England Netball under 21 squad, successfully denied Leeds any victories on several occasions. One particularly fantastic interception resulted in a swift counter and ultimately an excellent goal for the Lions.
At the conclusion of the game Birmingham had extended their lead to 14 goals, winning 39-25. The Lions have now extended their winning run to three games in the league. They now sit joint top of the table, although they have played more games than most teams.
The Lions will go into their next fixture away against Worcester. Based on their play today, Birmingham will be hoping to keep hold of their winning streak.
