Following on from a routine friendly win over the UoB Medics the previous week, the Men’s Rugby 2nd XV took to the Bournbrook pitch in crisp and overcast conditions looking to make their mark on division 2B of the BUCS leagues.
Indeed, this is what they emphatically did, running in a delightful ten tries in the process against what was in truth, a very poor Nottingham Trent 3rd XV. Regardless, there was a job to be done, something of which Birmingham’s fly-half Craig Bonnar was more than aware. Scoring two tries of his own, he was by far the best player on the pitch – providing a great physical presence matched only by his skill and ingenuity.
However it was the forwards of Birmingham who provided the grit and the graft in this match, consistently turning over Trent possession at the breakdown and ultimately hindering any chance of the opposition finding some tempo in their game. The pack were rewarded for their hard work, with number eight James Timmins and flanker Oein Byrne both running in a few tries of their own. Polishing the score, as it eventually finished at 60-12 to UoB.
In a game where the most controversial moment was the referee going off with a hamstring injury, Birmingham will certainly turn their attention to next Wednesday where they will look to put in a similar performance against Warwick 3rd XI.
