As the cardboard is swept away and campus returns to its usual splendour, the drama is still yet to subside following Saturday’s dramatic results night.
Jack Mably, current Vice President (Housing & Community), has been elected to lead the Guild of Students next year as President. He is to be joined by a new Officer Team following announcement in the Debating Hall on Saturday night of the results of the recent elections.
This year, over 5000 votes were cast by students across the University, up 5% on last year. You can re-live the drama of results night and see a breakdown of the new Officer Team 2015-16 at guildelections.co.uk/live.
Last night saw a special edition of Burning Chat welcome Welfare Officer Elect Ross Strong, Sports Officer Elect Remy Claustres and Representation & Resources Officer Elect Daisy Lindlar to talk about their feelings after a gruelling fortnight of preparation and campaigning. They spoke of their delight at their recent success but also their desire for change in the way our elections are run, calling for less cardboard, a shorter campaign period and support for a more diverse array of candidates.
Redbrick Editor James Phillips and GuildTV Head of Marketing Maeve Scally also joined in the discussion. Both called for changes in the elections regulations allowing media groups more freedom to scrutinise candidates and their policies more closely, leading on to a debate surrounding the publication of a recent article in The Tab concerning Jack Mably’s previous drink driving offence.
You can listen again to last night’s special edition of Burning Chat, hosted by Head of News Jack Lockyer-Stevens and Correspondent Lizzie Sharpe, above.
