As soon as the first note of Death Cab for Cutie’s new single ‘Black Sun’ is played, Ben Gibbard and co.’s familiar sound reminds you why eighteen years since the band’s formation- fans are still coming back for more.
Black Sun is from the band’s upcoming album Kintsugi and marks a definite change for the indie-rockers as it is the first without former guitarist and songwriter Chris Walla (although he does occasionally appear on the album), however after large disappointment with the most recent album Codes and Keys (2011) perhaps change is exactly what the band needs. Fans are immediately thrust into this rocky, raw track that establishes the band’s new direction and synth laden sound creates texture to a self-reflective, mournful tune.
It may be argued that although the track is of a high standard, it is arguably not as incredible as previous songs that the band have produced. Regarding the new sound Gibbard explains that he hopes that as the band “move[s] forward, people listen with as little prejudice as they can and try to hear the music for what it is and not what they want it to be.” However can you blame fans for wanting a repeat of mind blowing tracks such as ‘Brothers on a Hotel Bed’?
Comparisons aside, the song features the typical thought-provoking, meaningful vocals that can only be produced by such a genius as Ben Gibbard, backed by twanging guitar and an electronic feel. The song is then abruptly sliced in two as an eruption of powerful almost grungy guitar drives through the melancholy mood that the band have so skilfully constructed, creating a sandwich of rocky goodness that leaves fans hungry for more.
With such a phenomenal repertoire for fans to compare it with, it was always going to be a struggle for DCFC to make an impact. However like a phoenix from the ashes (*ahem* Codes and Keys) Black Sun reassures fans that the Washington formed threesome are coming back and I’m sure fans agree that it can’t come soon enough.
Death Cab for Cutie’s eighth studio album Kintsugi will be released March 31st 2015.
