Listening to this I can’t help but feel that Daft Punk and Jay-Z, two of the world’s most successful and critically acclaimed acts certainly of my lifetime, could have done a whole lot better. The song seems to represent both groups’ weakest areas. Daft Punk’s beat behind is dull, doesn’t change throughout and has no real range.
But who could they have brought in to add lyrics over the top, an attempt to make it more exciting? In this case, Jay-Z is the last person that would suit it. He’s a good rapper but he really, really doesn’t fit what is needed here. His lyrics are terrible, at one point he rhymes black berry with Blackberry (I mean come on, I could probably do better) and he hasn’t even justified it by rapping quickly, it’s like he’s just chatting down the mic.
On their own Daft Punk and Jay-Z are spectacular, but here is proof that, like salmon and chocolate cake, just because they are amazing on their own, doesn’t mean they go well together.
