An E.P launch can be one of the most challenging, awkward situation inducing moments of a band’s career. Have we got enough people? Have we got enough publicity? Are we fully confident in who we are as a band at this early stage?
Yonaka don’t ask themselves these questions. They don’t need to. They simply announce an E.P, with a midweek launch party in Camden and as if by magic, an energetic otherworldly 30 minute rock n roll extravaganza occurs. To see Yonaka live is to live a life on the edge. A sweaty, loud, rhythm driven edge, permeated with shouts, chants, and the marvelling that lead singer Theresa (despite not being classically trained AT ALL, apparently) can hold that note for that long.
Accessible and catchy but ultimately hard as nails, Yonaka are tough act to pin down into genre, but fans of Black Honey, Estrons and PINS will most certainly appreciate what they have to offer. With their debut E.P “Heavy” they consolidate their position as rock n roll’s coolest new additions; re-mixing a track or two fans might have heard previous versions of (Run), as well releasing an absolute shout along anthem crowd pleaser (Bubblegum). In the title track “Heavy”, they capture the essence of an E.P, and leaving us begging for a full album. And catching them live they are just as captivating as listening to this E.P suggested they would be.
