What is an MEP?
MEP stands for Member of European Parliament and they are elected to represent the interests of the region in Europe you have voted in. They should consider both local and national viewpoints and can question and lobby the Commission and Council of Ministers in addition to passing laws like mobile phone charges across EU countries and studying abroad within the EU.
Why are we electing an MEP if Brexit is happening?
That’s where it’s difficult. As Brexit has been delayed we now have to be a part of these elections which occur across the whole of the European Union this Thursday. If Brexit goes ahead on either June 3rd or October 31st then UK MEP’s will no longer be required.
What’s the point in voting then?
Voting is important regardless of Brexit. It is your democratic right to vote, even if you spoil the ballot or do not vote for any party. Voting is a way of sending a message to the government that you either agree or disagree with their policies and plans. This election, in particular, will also offer an opportunity to change the course of Brexit as MEP’s could lobby to leave.
Will my vote really affect the result?
The most googled phrase in the UK the day that Brexit was announced was ‘what is the EU?’. Many people do not use their vote but it does matter and can really alter the course of the elections. If lots of people think their vote won’t matter, it totals up and could really alter it all.
This election, in particular, is unlike usual UK elections as it uses proportional representation, meaning your vote for the smaller parties has a direct impact on the number of seats they have, as opposed to the constituency method used in our general elections.
